:05, happening as we speak, a big sink hole on highway 87 in san jose. that's right along the southbound side of the highway near west virginia street. work crews are out there and so is ktvu tara moyarti but what's the very latest? >> workers workers will not continue work until engineers arrive. we had to move because it was simply too dangerous. you can see where they've blocked out one southbound lane of 87 on the left and then one lane of alma avenue on the right. the sink hole is about 30 feet wide. there's a big gap underneath the median. now caltrans discovered the problem tuesday. they came out. they poured some gravel. sort of a band aid fix. and last night they compressed the gravel and found it sank. you can see where the concrete is exposed now. there's a huge crack running up and down on that roadway. they shutdown some lanes on the freeway. we are close to west virginia street. just to give you an idea where we are on 87. crews are expected to be out here all morning repairing the sink hole. damage is pretty extensive. the highway seems to be moving up. right now let's check i

a big clean up to do. a fire broke out at daly city's skyline elementary school on christian avenue. this happened about 11:30 last night. just look at the pictures. the portable classroom went up in flames. the damage includes the building itself, everything inside, books, chairs, audio- visual equipment. took firefighters about 15 minutes to put it out. authorities don't know what started the fire but it apparently started outside of the portable building. no word of any injuries and students by the way return to school on august 17th. >>> meantime firefighters say an overnight house fire in san francisco caused about $350,000 damage. this fire started just before 2:30 this morning at a home on melrose avenue. the flames then spread to a second house. took firefighters about 20 minutes to contain that one alarm fire. no injuries have been reported. authorities think the fire started in the living room of the first house, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >>> the book written by kidnap victim jaycee dugard does not go on sale for another day but it is already

. the danville fourth of july parade is such a big to-do that many locals set up chairs the night before. some people say the prime viewing spots have been passed down from generation to generation. >>> tough economic times are throwing a bucket of water in a lot of local fireworks shows. redwood city is among those that have canceled their firework displays. but one of the hardest hit cities in the bay area will be lighting up the night sky tonight. >> reporter: downtown valeo was awash in red, white and blue tradition this morning. residents lined sonoma boulevard for a good old fashioned fourth of july parade. at the same time, another holiday tradition nearly went up in smoke. >> three years ago we didn't have fireworks at all. and you don't realize how important something is or someone is until they're gone. >> reporter: if there's one thing a cash strapped city like valeo can't afford, it's a fireworks show. >> we emptied that out yesterday. >> reporter: rather than let the firework tradition die out like a burnt sparkler, business owners launched a campaign to raise the money themselves

on tropical storm don expected to be the first big storm to hit the u.s. this year. don is packing 50-mile-an-hour winds and could reach drought-stricken texas within 24 hours. kevin reece of khou is on the coast in corpus christi, texas, for us this morning. >> reporter: corpus christi bracing for tropical storm don and the first tropical storm i can remember covering most of the people are glad this storm is arriving. some precautions are taken but corpus christi hasn't had significant rain in at least four months so people aren't afraid of this tropical storm and welcoming its actively. some recautions are being taken and going through the marina making sure the boats are secure but not worried about moving any of those boats. no evacuations planned. convention and visitors bureau say no extra precautions out of the ordinary are being taken and hotels are still filling up for tourists for the weekend. locals tell me they hope the tropical storm brings what corpus christi desperately needs, 3 to 5 inches of rain. they hope don stay too long but long enough to remind everyone here what ra
